you caaaaaaan

But the question is, "do you really want to"?

We all want to know what to do,what to bring, what to leave behind, etc, etc. The easy answer from some is to "leave it all,you can get it all here" and I can imagine those same people with crazy looks after some of the questions they read.

Yes,yes-you can get skirts here, meds here, your kids fave toys and ones they havent dreamt of, undies here, hair products here, deoderant here-the list goes on and on. And you would make it ok if you left it all behind and decided to get things once here.If you are a person who can get by easily with little AND dont want to pay a lot for overage charges on bags,it would be wise, wise, wise to fill your bag with things for work.Even if you brought nothing but English books (low level, like 3 grades less than what you are teaching if not more in some instances)

What you (probably) wont find?
  • grits
  • an electric shaver for women
  • hair products for people with locs (in general stores and if you have please let me know!)
  • shea butter
  • some of the green vegetables you are used to
  • mascara at a reasonable price
  • foundation for darker skin unless its from MAC or Sephora
  • maybe your favorite brand of feminine product
  • vitamins at a reasonable price (more on that later)
  • natural supplements that youd find easily at home
  • homeopathic products
  • Im sure theres something else Im missing
Things you may just want to bring with you?
  • undies-if you have a bigger bust size, you may just want to bring bras you KNOW will be comfortable. No need to be hot AND uncomfortable!
  • vitamins-people say theyre expensive but they never really say HOW expensive. Ive seen something as simple as Omega 3 supplements for about 50 dollars a bottle.
  • medicines-this includes things as simple as cough drops.THEY DONT WORK HERE and even worse? They are made mostly of sugar and aspertame (whyyyyy??) Painpills seem to be ok and they do have this powder thats kind of like theraflu.I love theraflu and this also works well.
  • hair products-if you have something you love, bring it.If its not something regular like pantene it may not be here.I have yet to find anything I used at home for my natural hair.Luckily I do know how to make my own products for certain things.
  • Id even say bring a bag of grits if you think you cant make it a year without them, lol.

in regards to prescriptions, I would ask someone already over here to see if they have your prescribed medicine. Its possible that they dont and that they have another one just as good. If thats not an option you should stock up-and preferably before your current insurance runs out!

*leave at home expectations,preconceived notions,bad attitudes,worry,feelings of superiority,one way thinking,stubbornness,whining,and fear.*

It's That Time Again

Transfer time. I requested a transfer AND interviewed in a neighboring county. I even had an in (maybe) with a Teacher of the Year at a pretty good school that was about 15 mins from my house and brand new. I was hopeful but never too excited. May 5th is the last day to hear back and my district doesn't prioritize updating parts of their webpage so no job updates. Meanwhile, I know where I stand with the other county because they update their job posts as jobs are filled. Yet another reason their county is better than ours. But I digress... I was never an optimistic person so from the jump, I figured my teammates would get transferred even though I was ready to get out as soon as I got there. It looks like we will all be there so I'm not getting any kind of shakeup. I began to wonder what God has planned for me. Why can't I get out? My resume shows my experience and work ethic and I have great references. This place has taken me places even moving across the world to te...

Turning Tides

6 months ago I wasn't to happy with my situation. I was feeling stifled in terms of teaching time and a  host of other things and my main focus in life was to get OUT.  I must say that the year has progressed rather nicely and Im not feeling the same way about the year. Thanks to my coteacher, who understands what the kids need and provides those things even when someone says otherwise,we  are having a great year! I can't say that I would feel this way with another teacher. Our classroom runs smoothly and the kids are self sufficient. Today, two kids decided to make a book in the science center. The books were pre made with the title and had two pages for them to draw animals or write. They were provided with real pictures of animals to choose from and had been given instructions previously about their options (to draw animals they saw at the zoo, animals from the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, or to use the pictures if necessary). We also started this week putting ...

Moving on Up!!

So I was too tired to write about the adventure I had in trying to find our apartment. As there are no street addresses here people give ONLY landmarks and tell you which lights to go through,to,past and which to turn at. Even though Im not one to remember streed signs it can be quite confusing and I now know that having the street signs helps a bit. Whenever I do decide to get a car, I will definitely get a GPS. Im surprised that the keys didnt burn a hole in my pocket last night and I slept rather well. It helped that the night before I only got a few hours of sleep. Ok, so After school today, which was the first day,I couldnt wait to get hold of Rachel after Id gotten directions again. We were most pleasantly surrpised to find it. We knew we'd passed and/or seen it as we searched yesterday and it was (as he said) green, lol. If I could come up with a gripe, it would be that the rooms are a little small and have no wardrobes BUT that isnt an issue at all for me. I am most pl...
