Afwan

Today an Arabic teacher who speaks VERY little English thanked me in the staff meeting for helping her with activities and for reading to her kids while she had no English teacher. It was really no bother and I did it because the kids needed some English while we were waiting for the teacher to arrive. I wouldve continued to help her in any way I could until someone was placed in her room.

The kids listened attentively and seemed nothing like the way they were described to me by the teacher who left. Now when they see me they smile and wave. It feels good :-).

We got two new teachers today and it was much faster than anyone expected. They have lots of experience, more than most of us there, and Im sure things will work out well with them. Im willing to go ahead and say that there will be no more of the issues that seemed to be present before. Not as in disappeared but that they will be dealt with.

Today was another one of those days. Not a bad day but a day without my coteacher. This was a good indication of how it will be when she goes on maternity leave. Circle time this morning was great as well as many of our whole group activities for the first part of the day. The second half was a bit of a struggle and not with their activities but that they were already ready to go home about 45 mins before time. All it takes is ONE person to say "home" or to get their bookbags and EVERYONE follows suit. The other thing is them cleaning up after themselves. This is something new and Im not even sure it will catch on. After all, we are here to teach and not to change the culture.Having said that, there are "home rules" and "school rules" and I am not a maid and the ladies in our building should be cleaning the building and not after kids. I dont see anything wrong with responsibility.

Today, I left my room soon after the bell. It looked like confetti was popped on the floor and I couldnt bare to look at the lady when she came in to clean. At the very least, I put the chairs up on the table. I looked around for a spare broom to no avail and I knew that if I asked for one, shed come immediately to see what the problem was to fix it.

I rationalized it by weighing my day and I would take a productive and mostly calm day over a clean room anytime. Sitting on the carpet today with the kids this morning I actually felt like a teacher again and it was nice. Not that I dont otherwise but Im not in my own room and although my teacher welcomed me and I am able to make changes to the room at will, I know that I am a guest in her room and I cant just move things as I please.

Regardless of location, commute, etc, I really have a good placement and that makes a big difference in the time spent here. That and the fact that I have a shorter day than most and especially that Im not working until 8 or 9 at  night like I was many nights back home.

This will do

So I just havent made it around to making a video of the place.Part of that is because my phone, which had the great camera on it,is no longer. And leave it to me to buy a cute phone with a horrible camera.yes, I have a camera with video but its just too much hassle. At least I think so. And because Im supposed to be honing my craft, I decided to post my place in pictures. Enjoy. My color palette all these switches for one little bathroom no tv. . .yet just the two of us! I love this contraption, lol and on the off times that this occurs. . . I just use my teacher dry erase marker, lmbo So,so glad to finally be clutter free! cleaning takes one day a week besides the every other day of sweeping bc its super dusty here.I have ONE pile of stuff left and thats only because I need a book shelf.Thats coming soon.

Paradise?

So Ive been thinking about a move to Reem Island  . Not because I have a bad place (I dont) or because Im in a bad location (Im not),but because we plan on being here long term and this place has much more of a home feel as there are so many amenities there. The only drawback is the the location, which is also nice as far as I know right now. Only thing is its too close to Tourist Club and thats not a place I care for too much. And if the link above doesnt convince someone maybe the future plans  will! We have all that we would need to stay there pretty much and this place has...drumroooooooollllll-CLOSETS! Once of them even a walk in. It may sound like it but I dont have my hopes up and Im not even excited about it at this point. Im just looking at my options. This would be the one and only time youd catch me living on an island. My only requirement? That I live on a  bottom lower level floor. Should be an easy enough request as most people want to be higher...

Braces in the UAE

This has been a long time coming. Ive wanted braces since forever. At home it wasnt in the budget. Here, the first year went by and I decided that if I didnt get them this year, I would probably keep putting it off. So I start the process of looking. Requirements? clean, efficient,KNOWLEDGEABLE, affordable. That was pretty much what I wanted. After some searching, I realized that I couldn't pay 25000 dirham...didn't really want to pay 14000 but would if I had to...and then I came across an  ortho place  in Dubai. hmmmmmm. Dubai? Perks were: no down payment,500 dh each visit, retainer included. I was in. So I called and went hoping against all hope that it would be more than the regular consultation because Id driven from Abu Dhabi! Fortunately, they xrayed me and told me about the process a bit. I didn't know what to ask so I took my  papers after signing to the "deal" and went home with the biggest grin ever on my face. I WAS GETTING BRACES! And then I...
