halal

Imagine youve had a rough day at work. Youre driving home from a long day and for whatever reason it takes you forever to get home. By the time you are able to finally sit down and relax, you can tell that your body is tense and your muscles are tight.

Now imagine an animal being strung up for slaughter. Hes been kept in a closed room with little to no wiggle room, in a highly stressful environment, and probably hears his/her "friends" being killed in a nearby room. NEEEEXT!!

Now the animal is being strung up and the throat is slit, only not as to kill. They want his/her heart to pump out all the blood because its faster this way. In the meantime, the animal is wailing around and dying a horendous death.

Where did this entry come from and why the heck am I talking about this in my AD blog? Weeeell, I thought about it today and in previous days after repeatedly tasting meat that was unbelievably tender. Like, melt in your mouth tender. Like, OMG, what did you do to this chicken/beef/lamb?!
Many of the foods here are halal and it has to do with the way the animals are killed. I definitely think it makes a difference. How tight would your body be if you were in that situation?
Im not even a meat eater like that and, to be honest, I have definitely been lacking on my veggies. Here you get sides like salty pickles, raw cucumbers,a few carrots. . .I want some VEGGIES! and when I finally make it to the veggie souk in Al Mina, they may be good enough to write about.
For now, I dedicate an entry to the art of eating meat.

Turning Tides

6 months ago I wasn't to happy with my situation. I was feeling stifled in terms of teaching time and a  host of other things and my main focus in life was to get OUT.  I must say that the year has progressed rather nicely and Im not feeling the same way about the year. Thanks to my coteacher, who understands what the kids need and provides those things even when someone says otherwise,we  are having a great year! I can't say that I would feel this way with another teacher. Our classroom runs smoothly and the kids are self sufficient. Today, two kids decided to make a book in the science center. The books were pre made with the title and had two pages for them to draw animals or write. They were provided with real pictures of animals to choose from and had been given instructions previously about their options (to draw animals they saw at the zoo, animals from the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, or to use the pictures if necessary). We also started this week putting ...

Testyyyyyy

I sit here watching HGTV and typing away on my computer. Ive been doing this for days now. Apartment is pretty much empty and the hubby is there getting rid of the last few things before working one last weekend and coming home. People ask if Im excited yet and I dont think that it has hit me quite yet. I mean, I am excited but not like I will be when I get the ticket, or even when I get ready to board the plane, or especially when I finally get on Etihad!!! My legs are propped over my knee roller, which I got (again) today for the last stretch of this whole cast situation. Its cool and Im thankful to be healing properly and relaxing at home not doing too much of anything. I have awhile before I am forced to condence one last time before the final move. I am not looking forward to that task. I write before my departure with the next group in mind. I spent months reading about the experience of others and researching any and everything I could about Abu Dhabi and the UAE. Out of eve...

Moving on Up!!

So I was too tired to write about the adventure I had in trying to find our apartment. As there are no street addresses here people give ONLY landmarks and tell you which lights to go through,to,past and which to turn at. Even though Im not one to remember streed signs it can be quite confusing and I now know that having the street signs helps a bit. Whenever I do decide to get a car, I will definitely get a GPS. Im surprised that the keys didnt burn a hole in my pocket last night and I slept rather well. It helped that the night before I only got a few hours of sleep. Ok, so After school today, which was the first day,I couldnt wait to get hold of Rachel after Id gotten directions again. We were most pleasantly surrpised to find it. We knew we'd passed and/or seen it as we searched yesterday and it was (as he said) green, lol. If I could come up with a gripe, it would be that the rooms are a little small and have no wardrobes BUT that isnt an issue at all for me. I am most pl...
